FRANK ON GETTING THE ROLE OF MAGGIO: I had the book and I was in Africa on a visit. I read it and reread it and it was a big book. And I loved it, it was a hell of a book. And then I spoke to Harry Cohn, who was then the head of Columbia Pictures and a friend. And I said, "I'd like to play that." He said, 'Well, you've never done a dramatic role. You're a guy who sings and dances with Gene Kelly."And I said, "But that's the kind of thing I think I can do." "Well, let's make a test," he said. It was the barroom scene when Maggio went AWOL. That was an amazing afternoon because the director, Fred Zinnemann, said, "Well, what do we do here?" There was nothing in the script. He then said I should ad lib for two pages. I can't ad lib for a quarter of a page. And he said, "Well, do something. You know, what does a drunk do at the bar?" "Well, drunks do a lot of things at bars," I said. So I worked out some pieces of business with a couple of olives with the dice, and all that. And that was the test. And then I went to Africa. I heard that Eli Wallach, my dear friend, had also tested and I said, "Forget it!" I thought I was dead. He was such a good performer. In November, I did the Texaco Star Theater with Milton Berle, shopped for Ava's Christmas presents in New York and went to Montreal for a nightclub date. Harry Cohn called me there and said, "Come back, you've got the part."

EARLY NOVEMBER 1952: After reading the James Jones novel From Here to Eternity, FS decided he was born to play the meaty role of Angelo Maggio, a feisty underdog from the streets of Brooklyn, in a forthcoming film version of the best-selling book. "For the first time in my life, Dad recalled, I was reading something I really had to do. I just felt it. I just knew I could do it. I just couldn't get it out of my head." But the prospect seemed distant: Few in Hollywood believed Sinatra could carry an important dramatic role–or even attract moviegoers to theaters.
