I can read Russian well, but struggle to write in Russian. You don't have to write to me in English, but I will respond in English.

Most of the stuff I do on Russian Wikipedia relates to images (ex, uploading a less grainy version of a historic image, transferring images with recently expired copyright to Commons, digitally restoring historic images, etc) or fixing disambiguation links. If you are learning English and have been assigned to translate an article to English in school for a grade, please consider translating an article from this list. If you want me to do a restoration of a historic portrait or translate a page on a very notable topic to English, don't be afraid to ask. I am on VK. If you can, please help find the original photos from these (mostly) pre-1946 newspapers and magazines, the year these photocorrespondents died (needed to calculate copyright status of photos) for Wikimedia Commons, and identify the people in these photos.

Publications I need (email me if you have access to them)

(If you have access to one of these publications and are willing to share - please note what the date/issue of it for bibliography purposes)

  • Газета «Къызыл Кърым» 1941-1944 годы (especially pages featuring Amet-khan Sultan and other heroes)
  • Газета «Сталинский Сокол» от 14 февраля 1945 года (I'd like to see what the image on the cover page is)
  • Газета «Сталинский сокол» ~8-10? марта 1946 & 1948 годы (Hoping they contain photos of members of the regiments founded by Raskova)
  • Front inside cover (like this) and "Герои Великой Отечественной войны" (like this) pages from 1941-1945 «Красноармеец» magazine
  • Газета «Красная Армия» 1942-1948 годы
  • Any 20th century newspaper or magazine featuring Amet-khan Sultan
  • Any 20th century newspaper or magazine featuring members of the three women's aviation regiments founded by Raskova

Photos needed for Commons (in good resolution)

Some Russian archives like РГАКФД and ЦГАКФФД contain a few select photos that were published early enough to be public domain under Russian and American copyright law (and therefore eligible for Commons), yet still only low-quality previews are available. Unwatermarked and sufficient resolution versions can be purchased from the archive, but my attempts to buy unwatermarked photos have not been successful. (Hopefully someone reading this fluent in Russian can buy decent quality copies for Commons)

My opinions

  • Copyright should not last 100+ years, BUT we should still try to have correct information about copyright status and find early publications of historic photos given the current situation. It is far better to calculate the copyright expiration dates fair-use photos so that people in the future can move them to Commons and find as many truly, verifiably public domain photos as possible - rather than to "give up", ignore the rules, and mass-upload photos old to Commons with false public domain claims that will eventually be deleted anyway AND lead to the deletion fair-use photos that will later have to be re-uploaded when the mislabeled photo is removed.
  • Low-quality biography portrait photos that are copyright violations (ie, indicated to be public domain but are not) SHOULD be deleted and replaced with better-quality fair-use photos
  • More stuff needs to be in the public domain, especially photos from WWII and portraits of cosmonauts, so sign the petition
  • Allied flying aces with 20+ shootdowns who didn’t receive the gold star (for whatever reason, be it a clerical error or disciplinary issues) are still notable
  • The statement "(person) was featured on a (value) postage stamp of (country)" does not merit a "citation needed" tag when an image of that exact stamp is in that section of the article.
  • A photo of a statue that violates FoP rules (falsely labeled as under a free license) should not be used to replace a fair-use portrait in an infobox.
  • Simferopol Airport should be named after Amet-khan Sultan AND Makhachkala Airport should be named after somebody who was actually born in, grew up in, resided in, worked in, and/or studied in Dagestan (perhaps Magomed-Kazim Gayirkhanov or Gapal Gadzhiev).
  • The ribbon rack in a biography infobox for a participant in the Great Patriotic War DOES NOT need a reference for every jubilee medal they received - it is sufficient to have a known year of demobilization & death from a reliable source to include such corresponding medals.

Needed articles

I am not proficient in writing in Russian. I would very much appreciate it if someone else could write these articles. I can help you find sources and photos for the articles.

Articles needing to be expanded

The following articles should be rewritten/can be significantly expanded using the information available in their English Wikipedia counterparts

People we need to find obituaries for:

(so that we can have articles with accurate information and include fair-use portraits. Gravestones with date or year of death engraved would be good too.)
