Эксперимента́льная му́зыка (англ. Experimental Music) — музыка, необычный инструментарий либо новые композиционные принципы которой делают её неустоявшуюся эстетику в перспективно-ценностном отношении достаточно неопределённой и спорной.[1]

Экспериментальную музыку следует отличать от авангардной музыки, поскольку: «… в самом общем виде, авангардную музыку можно рассматривать как занимающую экстремальные позиции в пределах традиции, в то время как экспериментальная музыка лежит за её пределами.» [2]

Термин «экспериментальная музыка» довольно часто используется в музыкальной журналистике (иногда с оттенком неодобрения) для того, чтобы лаконично охарактеризовать образцы той музыки, эстетика которой явным образом нарушает все существующие в музыкальном искусстве традиционные нормы и правила.
