English: The expression Italian Civil War is used to define the period between September 8, 1943, the date of the armistice of Cassibile, and May 2, 1945, the date of the surrender of Caserta. The war was fought between the forces of the fascist Italian Social Republic of Benito Mussolini, allied to the Axis, and the Italian partisans, aided by the Allies and the remnants of the Italian Royal Army, loyal to King Victor Emmanuel III. Some of the historians who have studied the Italian civil war have not restricted their analysis to the war itself, but they have also studied the consequences that it had on the Italians after the surrender.

Italiano: Con Guerra civile in Italia (1943-1945) si intendono gli eventi sul suolo italiano durante la seconda guerra mondiale in un periodo compreso tra l'annuncio dell'armistizio di Cassibile (8 settembre 1943) e la resa di Caserta (2 maggio 1945). In quel periodo si scontrarono i reparti della Repubblica Sociale Italiana (RSI), collaborazionisti con le truppe occupanti della Germania nazista, e i partigiani italiani, sostenuti materialmente dagli Alleati. Oltre ai combattimenti diretti tra i reparti armati delle due parti, si registrarono anche rappresaglie sulla popolazione civile e repressioni da parte delle autorità della RSI, scontri tra partigiani, mentre rari furono gli scontri armati tra le truppe fasciste e quelle fedeli al governo monarchico, il cosiddetto "Regno del Sud".
