English: The Japanese Type 89 Grenade Discharger (Jutekidanto) was a light mortar used in World War II. It was known in the West as a "leg mortar" or "knee mortar". The former term came from the fact that Japanese soldiers carried them strapped to the belt, with the barrel hanging next to the thigh. The latter term was mistranslated from Japanese, and led to serious injuries when Allied soldiers tried propping them against their knees, rather than against the ground as was intended, when firing them. The same translation error happened with the Type 10 grenade discharger.
