In July, 1831, Leopold of Saxe-Coburg was crownedking of the Belgians under the title of Leopold I. Soonafter his coronation he found himself burdened with war,as the Dutch in violation of the armistice had sent anarmy across the frontier. With an unformed government,a hastily organized army, and a kingdom in disorder, thenew king felt unable to oppose the invaders, and in hisdilemma he appealed to France for aid. The aid waspromptly given; Marshal Gerard, accompanied by theDuke of Orleans, marched into Belgium with 60,000 men,whereupon the Dutch retired to their own boundaries. The conference of the powers determined to compelthe Dutch to give up the citadel of Antwerp, which theystill held. Accordingly the army of Marshal Gerard ad-vanced upon Antwerp, and a combined English andFrench fleet entered the Scheldt to co-operate with the

The army consisted of forty-eight thousand in-fantry, nine thousand cavalry, and six thousand artillery,the latter comprising a siege train for the special purposeof reducing the Antwerp citadel. The British fleet com-prised five ships of the line, the French fleet included threeships of the line and five frigates, and these combinedarmaments made their rendezvous on the coast of Englandand sailed together for the Scheldt. It was an odd specta-cle to see England and France co-operating in warfareafter centuries of enmity. For more than a year the town of Antwerp had been inthe possession of Belgium while the citadel was held byGeneral Chasse, the Dutch commander, with a garrison offive thousand men. It was commonly called the citadeldu Sud to distinguish it from the citadel du Nord onthe other side of Antwerp.
