English: Jacqueline Kennedy, Caroline Kennedy, and John Kennedy, Jr. visit the temporary grave of President John F. Kennedy on May 29, 1964 (the President's 47th birthday). The evergreen boughs cover the base of the temporary Eternal Flame at the head of the grave vault. The small white cross to the left marks the grave of the unnamed Kennedy daughter who was stillborn in 1956. The white headstone to the right marks the grave of Patrick Bouvier Kennedy, who died in August 1963 two days after being born. Both children were reinterred next to their father in December 1963. The military hats on the evergreen boughs were first left as an impromptu act of respect by the presidential honor guard during the funeral in November 1963, and were continually replaced by military personnel until banned in April 1967.
