English: Commemorative Stele to Lt General Sir Thomas Picton killed during the Battle of Waterloo, 18 June 1815. Erected ~ 1980.

Picton had already been badly injured at The Battle of Quatre Bras, on 16 June 1815. Two days later, he was mortally shot to the head while repulsing a French advance – as reported, his last words were : Hurrah! Hurrah! Charge! Charge!.
His body, repatriated to Britain with great pomp, reached London one week after his death and was laid to rest in the family's vault, St George’s Church, Hanover Square. In June 1859, Lt General Sir Thomas Picton was exhumed and transferred to St Paul’s Cathedral.

Picton's Tree ("L'Arbre de Picton") : ►(File:18 June 1815 – Waterloo – L'Arbre Picton.jpg). A tree, believed to be close to the fatal spot, was given his name, a tree that emerged from the bloody fight trimmed to his trunk and a few branches, a tree that didn't survive the battle long : in the 1840's, it was depicted as a dead trunck.
It would have stood inside today's small unkept grove to the north of the Hanovrian Monument and to the east of the N.5 road, at about (50.6795, 4.4133).
It has now gone.

The stele was initially located further off the street, to be as close as possible to the place where Picton was killed ; but, being out of sight, along the edge of the grove, it was later moved to its present location.

Lamentably, the stele was overthrown at the beginning of 2011, face against the ground, but duly re-erected a few months later.
One year earlier, the stele to the 27th Regiment of Foot (File:18 June 1815 – Waterloo – 27th (Inniskilling) Regiment of Foot, stele.jpg was similarly overthrown, and re-erected, only to be vandalized again one year later, and for sure re-erected.
None suffered any damage.

May eternal shame be cast on those culprits.
