English: Badami caves are located in Badami, Karnataka, India. Inscriptions here help date two of these caves to the 6th-century, while parts of the third cave and the most of the fourth is likely from the 7th-century. All were likely complete in 6th to 7th century, with some additions to the Jain caves likely in early 8th century.

• The above panel shows Ardhanariswara (sometimes also spelled as Ardhanarishvara, Ardhanarisvara). It is half Shiva, half Parvati, symbolism for the male and female principle each being the half of the other.

• Above the left side of the panel has Shiva iconography. Nandi the bull, the ascetic aspect of Shiva, his rear hand holds an axe (broken), bare chest, simple leg. The right side of the panel has Parvati iconography. Her attendant, her rear hand holds a lotus just opening, her side including her hip and leg covered with jewelry.

• The iconographic details extend all over in a close up study of the panel. His side of the tall crown (upper right inset) shows crescent moon and a miniature Ganga legend. Her side is intricate jewelry. Similarly the loop from the shoulder to hand is shown as jewelry on her side, which morphs into a snake on his side (lower right inset). The band on her hips is studded with space for precious stones, but is simple cloth on his side.

• There are green, blue and red shades and fragments in parts of this panel. That is because the Badami caves were originally painted caves. Almost all of the original paint has been lost to history and natural elements, except for certain sections.
