BOMBARDMENT OF FORT SUMTER. The story of the bombardment and fall of Fort Sumter is best told byAbraham Lincoln (page 3221). In fact, his messages form the most remark-able treatise ever written on the moral aspect of the great conflict. Judged by the loss of life, no battle could be more insignificant, saysRhodes. Not a man on either side was killed. Judged by the train ofevents which ensued, few contests in our history have been more momentous. The people of the North, he continues, to the last praying and hopingthat actual hostilities might be averted, were profoundly moved. . . . Withexcitement and with sorrow they followed the course of the bombardment;with stern determination their minds accepted the policy which this graveevent portended, and when on Monday, April 15, 1861, they read of thePresidents call for 75,000 militia . . . they gave with one voice their approvalof the policy foreshadowed, and rose almost as one man to the support oftheir chief magistrate.
