Breast Pump. present. Hand pumps are not good, as too muchforce is apt to be used in making suction—the nip-ple may thus be torn off. Where a breast-pumpcannot be had, a simple contrivance may be resortedto for emptying the breasts which is often veryeffective. A bottle filled with very hot water maybe emptied of its contents, and while still hot themouth of the bottle closely applied over the nipple. i56 OBSTETRICAL NURSING. Handkerchief Bandage of Breast. Their application is as follows : The base of thehandkerchief, folded as a triangle, should be placedobliquely across the chest and under one breast,with the apex or summit of the triangle over the MANAGEMENT OF THE LYING-IN. 157 corresponding shoulder; one angle is carried overthe opposite shoulder, the other under the axilla,or armpit, of the same side. These ends should betied on the back of the shoulder, and the apex ofthe triangle pinned to them/—(Smith.) Should both breasts need support, a similar ban-dage may be applied to the other breast. To pre-vent the base of one or both of these bandages fromslipping up, the ordinary handkerchief bandage hasbeen modified in the Womans Hospital by the Modificationaddition of a belt, around the waist of a strip of mus- chieflin or ordinary roller bandage, to which the base breast,of the bandage may be fastened by safety-pins.
