The first vessel ever seen on these waters was the Griffin, built bythe explorer, La Salle, on Lake Erie in 1678. Thus commenced the third or com-mercial period. The fourth or military period begins in 1^95. At that date, Cadillac, whoafterwards founded Detroit, established a small fort on the straits. Then camecontests and skirmishes not unmingled with massacres, for the.Indians enlisted onboth sides. Finally the post of Mackinac, together with all the French strongholdson the lakes was surrendered to the English in September, 1761. The flags of threenations successively floated over this island.
