If the mother is infected during the later months of pregnancy,the placenta usually remains unaffected. Frankel bases these conclu-sions upon the examination of more than one hundred specimens, andhis views have been confirmed by Hennigl and MacDonald.2 Speci-mens of syphilitic placenta? in my possession show very well the con-dition of the villi described by Frankel, but exhibit even more clearlythe condition of the placenta materna known as endometritis placen-taris gummosa, in which the decidual cells are enormously increasedand overgrown, encroaching deeply upon the intervillous
