It must often happen that the same uterine contraction which atfirst so diminishes the area of the placental site as to force off theplacenta from the uterine wall is, immediately after the separation ofthe placenta, at once converted into the detruding force that expels thelatter from the uterine cavity. In such cases it would be difficult todetect the dividing moment between separation and detrusion, one seem-ing to be but a continuation of the other; and it is this circumstancedoubtless that has led some observers to advance the theory that theplacenta is separated not only by the diminution of the placental site,but also by being grasped and pushed off from the uterine wall by theaction of the uterine muscle.
