According to Frankel, this infiltration of the villi with granu-lation-cells, and their consequent increase in size and distortedshapes, are characteristic of syphilis and make certain the diag-nosis of the disease. As to the seat and extent of the lesion, theyvary with the manner and time of the fetal infection. If theovule is infected by the impregnating spermatic particle, theplacenta, if diseased at all, will constantly present the granulation-cell infiltration of the villi and the degeneration of their epithelialcovering. If the mother is infected during the fruitful coitus, theremay be endometritis placentaris characterized by the enormous

If the mother issyphilitic before conception, the disease of the placenta takes theform of endometritis placentaris gummosa. If the mother isinfected during the latter months of pregnancy, the placenta usu-ally remains unaffected. Frankel bases these conclusions uponthe examination of more than one hundred specimens, and hisviews have been confirmed by Hennig x and MacDonald.2Specimens of syphilitic placentae in my possession show the 1 Archiv f.
