But it is time to go to the ruins this paper is written about. TULA. The Toltecs arrived here in 670, the Aztecs in 1196, Humboldtstates. It is situated about 30 miles from the City of Mexico, in theState of Hidalgo, on the banks of the river Tula or Montezuma, whichjoins the river Tampico, near its mouth in the Gulf of Mexico. Prescott (p. 4) says : The Toltecs established their capital at Tula,,north of the Mexican valley, and the remains of extensive buildingswere to be discovered there at the time of the conquest. THE PYRAMIDS OF SAN JUAN TEOTIHUACAN. These are referred to in letter No. 3. See pages 43 to 47 and notes. Humboldt speaks of them as the most ancient of all; he adds thatSiguenza believed them to be the work of the Olmecs, and that theToltecs appear to have constructed the pyramid of Cholula on theirmodel.
