SchuylerColfax, who waspresent at the in-terview: In 1862, thepeople of NewYork City weregreatly troubled, (some of them) for fear of a bombardment of thecity by the confederate navy. Public meetings wereheld to discuss the situation, and the matter at last re-sulted in the appointment of a delegation of fifty menwho represented, in their own right, two hundred millions of money.

These millionaires were to call on the President andinduce him to send a gunboat or a warship to protect thecity. When they called they were impressively introduced,and the fact that they owned two hundred millions ofmoney was made especially prominent. The chairman of the delegation made a very earnestappeal for protection, and he also emphasized the fact thatthey owned two hundred million dollars worth of prop-erty. In his reply Lincoln stated that he would be glad toafford them the necessary protection, but the fact wasthat under the circumstances it was impossible for him tofurnish them even a gunboat, all the boats being in useand the credit of the government at low ebb. But,said he, if I were worth half as much as you gentlemenare, and were as badly frightened as you are, I wouldbuild a gunboat and give it to the government for theprotection of my own city.
