Until oneoclock this contest lasted, when the Federals,with angry desperation, turned their wholeforce of artillery on the little city, and sentdown from the heights a perfect storm of shot The Federals then constructed their pontoonswithout molestation, and the grand divisionof Sumner passed over into Fredericksburg. About a mile and a half below the town,where the Deep Run empties into the Rappa-hannock, General Franklin had been allowedwithout serious opposition to throw two pon-toon bridges, and his grand division passedover and massed on the level bottoms oppositeHamiltons Crossing, thus placing himself infront of Stonewall Jacksons corps. The nthand 12th were thus spent by the Federals incrossing the river and preparing for battle.
