In summer, the family lived in a stone cottage on thereservation belonging to the government, in the suburbsof Washington, known as the Soldiers Home. A fewservants were then kept at the White House, and, in caseof extraordinary business being on hand, the Presidenttarried there all night. But usually he was driven out atthe close of the days work, and the evenings at the Sol-diers Home cottage were often very delightful. Thedistance from the city kept away importunate office-seekers and other petitioners, and familiar friends wouldcall and help to pass the evening in social chat. The propositionwas most unpalatable to Lincoln, and he resisted it aslong as he could. When he finally consented, the littleshow of the cavalry escort was almost distressful to him,and he repeatedly expressed his disgust at the jinglingand the jangling of the troop.
