It needed the touch of a trained mind toperform the task for which Providence was fash-ioning him. So, this seeming calamity was nowto prove a blessing in opening up the way to thelong-deferred university studies, and an impor-tant event in the train of circumstances whichcontributed to his equipment for J;he work ofthe ministry. As the father had seen university life at Glas-gow, Alexander determined to spend the nextfew months within the shadow of the same ven-erable institution. So the family at once movedto Glasgow, and were soon settled within reachof the university. Here Alexander, with his unquenchable thirstfor knowledge, bent all the energies of his greatmind in the mastery of such studies as wouldbest fit him to preach the Word of Life. UNIVERSITY LIFE 35 of intense mental activity. The habits of indus-try and early rising formed in youth now servedhim to good purpose. It was his custom to be-gin his work at four oclock, and not to lay asidehis books until ten at night. By an economicaluse of time, he was enabled, not only to keep inthe front rank of his classes, but to do a vastamount of general reading. The list of booksread during his one winter in Glasgow, of whichhe kept a memorandum, and from which hemade copious extracts in his commonplacebook, included poetry, ethics, natural history,philosophy, theology, in fact, seemed to coverthe whole range of moral and philosophicalinvestigation. Such was his capacity for work,that in addition to his studies he managed tolargely defray his expenses by teaching privateclasses in Latin, grammar and arithmetic. Another marked characteristic of his studentlife was his punctuality. He was never late atclass. At every roll call he was on hand torespond, as the custom then was,
