Recent experiments show that oats contain asubstance, easily soluble in alcohol, which hasan irritant action on the motor cells of thenervous system. It is a nitrogenous substanceapparently of an alkaloid character. The quan-tity present varies according to the quality ofthe grain and the soil on which it is grown.The darker varieties contain more than the light.Its composition is given asC56 H21 N01S. Thebruising and milling of the oats diminishesthe quantity of this substance very rapidly, butit is quicker in its action.—Hardwick^s ScienceGossip. The increase of dyspepsia, especiallyamong young persons, is largely attribu-table to the extensive use,of oat meal. 18
