To this letter the following answer has been sent, alsoaddressed to the Editor of the Engineer : Sir : In the Engineer o( April 22 a correspondent, whosigns himself An Indian Locomotive Superintendent.challenges the assertion made in the Railroad and En-gineering Journal that American locomotives, if put onIndian railroads, would run 50 per cent, more miles ina given time and pull heavier loads, and says that hesupposes he—the Editor of the Journal— has someAmerican locomotive builders at his back for whose benefithis articles have been written, and wants to know where he can get one of these wonderful engines. It is not entirely obvious what having some locomotivebuilders at ones back means. I may say, however, thatthe writer of the articles referred to has no interest what-ever in any locomotive building establishment, exceptingthe little which results from the circumstance that some
