Examination Before Labor: Locating the cephalic prominence by arching the hand across the supra-pubic region (from a photograph). THE CONDUCT OF NORMAL LABOR. 353 thrust downward into the brim of the pelvis. The pelvic excavation is thenexplored to learn if it contains the presenting fetal part. If it is filled beforelabor, the presenting part is the vertex. No other fetal part sinks into thelesser pelvis until labor begins, and even this sinking very rarely occurs exceptin prirniparse. In the latter the fetal head is normally always in the pelvicbrim. During labor either pole, whether the woman has previously bornechildren or not, should be found in the lesser pelvis. The head when it lies above the lesser pelvis is not usually so accessible topalpation as when in the excavation. A useful maneuvre for locating thehead, if it is not readily found by direct palpation, is to place thehands in the usual position over the sides of the lower uterine seg-ment and proceed as for external bal
