Spain also was dilatoryin dispatching her exhibits, and also sent afine representation of her productions, underpatronage of the government. The Britishexhibitors seemed to comprehend best thespirit and requirements of the Exhibition, andtook a pride in sending samples of the bestart-work of their country, as well as of her 264 EXHIBITION, CENTENNIAL. finest industrial products; yet her latter ex-hibition, owing to the questionable commer-cial advantage of competing with Americanprotected manufactures, was not so large and fine as at Vienna. little indignant at being credited with so littleartistic understanding as was inferred by manyof the art and ornamental exhibits. Several foreign exhibitors frankly declared, after see-ing the American displays, that, if they hadknown what they had to compete with, they EXHIBITION, CENTENNIAL. 2G5 would have made a difference in the characterof the articles exhibited. In the American de-partment the exhibition was unexpectedly fulland rich, although many novel manufacturingprocesses remained unexhihited, owing to thejealousy Of the proprietors lest their methodsmight he copied. The European colonies anddistant nations were, in the main, better rep-resented than in any of the former expositions;and it is one of the best results of internationallairs that countries far removed from the usualtracks of commerce have greeted them as ameans of opening up intercourse with the com-mercial world.
