The picture we engrave, Mary of Burgundy before the Sheriffs of Ghent, has no little character in the attitudes and faces of the men, but the dress and head of Mary are altogether modern, and by this fault the value of the picture as a historical

Nor is it to be believed that, under any circumstances, Mary ofBurgundy would ever have assumed such an attitude of abject submission toward her subjects, as is seen in this picture. In general, however, given his subject— and Wauters, no more than the rest of the historical painters, seems to be governed by any fixed purpose in the choice of a subject— this is a capable and well-equipped artist. Some of his portraits are excellent; one of the best is that of the young son of Mr. Somgee, of Brussels, the owner of a gallery of modern pictures in that city. The boy has been riding on the beach accompanied III 312 ART AND ARTISTS OF OUR TIME. by his dog, and lias stopped his cantering for a moment, to looli our way.
