the day with Battery F. The bill of farewas roast beef, roast lamb, boiled chicken, boiledham, plum duff with whiskey sauce, pies and hardcrackers. The issue of rations of this character,although very rarely served, had a good effect uponthe men. Early in August, 1S62, the post of the provostguard on Pollock Street, near the rear of the batteryquarters and in close proximity to post number twoof the battery guard, had been fired upon severalnights in succession, between midnight and threeoclock in the morning, and one or two men hadbeen wounded. All efforts to discover the firingparty had proved unsuccessful. Buildings in the vicin-ity had been carefully searched, and everything in theshape of fire-arms confiscated, but still at the samelocality, and about the same hour in the morning, thereport of the gun and the whiz of the bullet washeard. Soonthe report and whiz were heard, and about five min-utes later some one saying : Open the door, quick !quick! Following the direction of the sound, acitizen was discovered standing at the door of a housenearly opposite the battery quarters, waiting to beadmitted. The circumstance was immediately re-ported to the battery officer of the day, Lieut.Charles H. Pope, who, gaining admission to thehouse, arrested the man, who of course denied allknowledge of the shooting, and claimed that he hadjust returned from fishing. He was turned over tothe provost marshal, placed in jail to await trial, butwas either released or escaped and disappeared fromthe city.
