ADMINISTRATION OFABRAHAM LINCOLN. 721 army had been weakened by the withdrawalof General Longstreets corps, twenty-fourthousand strong, by the Confederate govern-ment, leaving him about fifty thousand men. General Hooker, upon learning of Leesweakened condition, determined to attackhim. He divided his army into two columns.One of these, consisting of the Second, Fifth,Eleventh, and Twelfth army corps, underhis own command, was to cross the Rap-pahannock above Fredericksburg andturn the Confederate position. The othercolumn, consisting of the First, Third,and Sixth corps, under General Sedg-wick, was to cross the river at Fred-ericksburg and attack the heights. Be-tween these forces it was believed thatLees army would be crushed.
