edto hear the first shot and then bolt for thefort, whilst if we were in the fort, we slumberedcalmly, feeling that if a shell did happen toget us there, destiny must be very decidedlyagainst us, as it would have to work so hardto find us. Kimberley is not exactlycomposed of Sunday-school superintendents, andas a rule is rather bored by Sundays, butnot this one. Then, again, everywhere youwent, forts were being built, and the clangof sheet steel, railway rails, old iron railwaysleepers, etc., etc., was heard all over theplace. The streets were full of carts andhandcarts and wheelbarrows, and even nativescarrying materials for forts. Many peoplecould not get boys, as the demand was sogreat for labour, and so they had to do thework themselves. Several of the merchants had large stocksof the coarse Boer salt, which is got by crystal-lisation from the salt pans, and they madeforts of this. It is packed in large sacks, andanswered splendidly. In the first bombard-ment, I had seen at a bakers a fort madeentirely of sacks of flour. It was very good,but all the same, I was just as pleased I didnot deal with that particular baker. But theg
