But my con-nection with Fleet-street goes back to 1834, asin that year my grandfather was made a part-ner in the firm of bank-note engravers, Perkins,Bacon and Petch. so you will see that I amfully qualified for paper land. Since thetime the hon. secretary mooted the idea of asmall luncheon party on .\pril 8th, I have hadthe misfortune to lose my esteemed co-director.Mr. Albert E. He has passed away, and left anhonoured name behind him, and except forhis death my other two colleagues, his sons,would have been present to-day, but I knowthej are in spirit. (Hear, hear.) Future of the Industry. Before passing on to the more serious partof my reply, I should like to thank the hon.secretar) and also the committee, all of wiiomare friends of very long standing, for ttie ex-cellent arrangements thej- have made for usall to-day. And now, sir, if you will allowme a few minutes I should like to refer to thequestion which is uppermost in all ourthoughts, i.e., the future of the great industrywhich most of us in this room represent, insome shape or other, and one which permeatesto nearly every being in the land.
