on all four sidesand between them in reveals are detached octagonalshafts. Each shaft of the group carries its own order inthe orthodox style. The capitals are richly carved, thosein the lower arcade of a convex form, with interlacingfoliage, grotesque animals, knots and twists of variouskinds, much elaborated and highly finished. Those of theupper galleries have the concave outline and angle volutesof a more advanced kind than one would expect from soearly a date. There are however some like them at thecontemporary churches of William the Conqueror at Caen. Thetran- The apsidal transepts are later than the nave and were built about 1146. They have a diameter of 32 ft.and are surrounded by ambulatory aisles parted fromthem by cylindrical columns 2 1 \ in diameter carryinground arches of two orders. The semi-dome is supportedby converging ribs from the piers between the windows.These transepts are as fine as anything I know inRomanesque architecture. septs CH. xvm) GERMAN ROMANESQUE 23

Fig. 72. 24 GERMAN ROMANESQUE (ch. xviii Characterof GermanRoman-esque The great early German churches, especially those onthe Rhine, have a sort of sublimity about them that is alltheir own; and though they bear marks of their Lombardparentage they have an individuality which places themin a class by themselves. They are generally on a grandscale, the naves with a span of over 30 ft., and they arevery lofty, unlike many early buildings which are low andstunted. Externally they have considerable richness ofdesign, especially when there is the little colonnadedgallery which with its black intervals and well-definedarcades and colonnettes always has a brilliant effect.
