lintel fromwhose mouth proceed the ends of the threads which formthe border of the rosettes. The figure carving here, though lively and full ofspirit, is very inferior to that of Aries and S. Gilles.The attitudes are forced and extravagant, the figures areattenuated and drawn out beyond all proportion, and themodelling is wanting in breadth and simplicity. It is thework of a very different school, which has little trace ofeither Roman or Byzantine influence, but in which, withall its imperfections, one seems to see the seeds of growthand of the future Gothic art. The cloister of Moissac (Plate CXI I) is one of the finest in France though it has been a great deal altered since it was first built. Its original date is given by an inscription which with its abbreviations expanded reads as follows : ANNO AB INCARNATIONE ^TERNI PRINCIPIS MILLESIMOCENTESIMO FACTVM EST CLAVSTRVM ISTVD TEMPOREDOMINI ANSQVITILII ABBATIS . Thesculptures and the capitals no doubt belong to the dateof the inscription, but the cloister was re-built early in the12th century, when the abbey adopted the rule of Citeaux,and the old carvings were re-fixed in the new work. Thearches of the cloister are now pointed instead of beinground and it is not vaulted but has a wooden roof.
