tribesmenreceived several rude shocks, and the memory of theMohmand Expedition of 1908 will remain fresh for manyyears. Almost the whole country was overrun by theforce under Sir James Willcocks, and it was demon-strated to the tribe in the most practical manner possiblethat any part of their territory is within reach of Britisharms at any season of the year. By May 28 only one section—the Baizais—still re-mained unrepentant. The Baizais are the most westerlyof the Mohmand clans, and live on both sides of theAfghan border, consequently their geographical positionis their safeguard to a large extent. For political reasonsit was obviously impossible to carry punitive measuresbeyond the Durand line, and so reduce them to the samedegree of submission as their more easterly neighbours,but they were not allowed to go unpunished.
