My dear Fanny,
I am obliged to your kindness for the privilege of reading the letter of your sister, whom I bear in constant memory I did not know before that Mackintosh had returned to his fast-anchored English home.
When you write to your sister let her know that I am grateful for her kind regard, tell Mackintosh that I wish I could see him for a little while to talk of many things. Has he finally abdicated his Gov’t – like James 2nd never to return? For affairs with England are at this moment in as critical a condition as this administration can bring about. I would not be sorry for foreign strife, even war, in order to distract attention from Kansas and our domestic affairs. Besides, it is governed by a vulgar jealousy and hatred of England, and thinks it behaves grandly when it sends a menace at this Power. The diplomatic (confess here) are all anxious for the (rem___t).
Cushing, who is the special (marplot), does not see how the pending question can be settled without war! And he talks about this contingency as he would about his dinner.
I am under (e__stole_y) debt to your family, beginning with dear little Erny, which I shall repay.
