KEATS. WHEN we speak of authors who were wrongedby their critics, the mind turns first to thetwo young poets who lie together in the Protestantcemetery at Rome. There are many of us who areold-fashioned enough to believe, notwithstandingmuch that has very properly been said by LordHoughton and Mr. William Rossetti, that brutalcriticism did more than anything else to kill Keatsin the year 1821. It is beyond question a good thingto show that manliness is an element of the literarycharacter; but we fail to see that this is an elementthat may not coexist with a very keen sensitivenessto what people say about us. He who, withoutflinching, can bear to be told that he is * a shallowfool, and that his poetry is drivelling idiocy, issurely a little too amiable for this unamiable world:he, on the other hand, whose friends are silent whenhe is charged with indecency and a desire to raisethe banner of a black ambition, whose only aim isto ruin society, may not fairly be charged with wantof manlin
