Краткое описание

Описание
English: The Marmolada is the highest peak of the Dolomites, a mountain range in the eastern Italian Alps. On Sunday 3 July 2022, a serac (i.e., a pinnacle of ice) of the Marmolada glacier broke loose. The collapse caused a massive avalanche of snow, ice and rocks to hit a hiking path on the mountain’s flank at a time when several people were present. As of 13 July, a total of eleven causalities have been reported by the Italian authorities. The area where the collapse occurred is visible in this image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 12 July 2022. Data from Copernicus satellites are key to mapping and monitoring glaciers around the world.
