n economy of space is desirable a single large inside bur isemployed instead of two burs. Knitting machines are usually furnished with four feeds to acylinder, but more feeds may be employed except on small sizedcylinders. The production of a machine is proportioned to thenumber of feeds. Single Plush Feed. Single plush is plain knitting with ayarn looped in each course of plain stitches. As it is usually madeit is looped in one stitch, then skips two stitches on the back, andis then looped in another stitch and so on, thus making this yarnappear on the back of the cloth almost entirely. The single plushfeed is essentially the same as the plain feed, except that a backingbur and a clearing bur are employed in addition to the burs usedin the plain feed. The backing bur cannot carry the yarn downfar enough on the needles, so the clearing bur is employed to assistit, just as the cast-off bur assists the lander. The feed, shown in Fig. 23 nearly opposite the plain feed, is 63 52 KNITTING.

Cast-off bur. the holding-down wheel has tocover three burs instead of one — as in theplain feed — it should be larger than thatrequired for a plain feed; on the otherhand the large holding-down wheel willanswer for a plain feed. The backing bur and the clearing burhave to be held on to the stud by a nut,as shown in this cut, as the tendency ofthe work is to lift them off the stud. Thebacking yarn is fed into the bur by theguide shown. Sometimes the clearing buris supported by a bracket secured to thebacking stand. A flat presser is alsoshown, but either the large round pressershown in the plain feed or the small roundpresser shown in the double plush feedmay be employed.
