'Atef'-Crown of Ramesses II (Acc. 1783)
This is the crown from a twice-lifesize, red granite statue of Ramesses II in the form of the god Osiris. This is the 'atef' crown usually worn by Osiris, the god of the dead and rebirth, but was also worn by the king during certain rituals. The crown is depicted with a ram's horns, a tall central element, and feathers on the sides. A falcon supporting the back of the crown represents Horus, the god of kingship. On the back of the statue, an inscription gives the names and titles of Ramesses II and refers to his 'heb-sed', or jubilee festival.
This piece measures 70.5x49.5cm and dates to Dynasty 19, the reign of Ramesses II (c. 1279-1213 BC). It was disvovered in Koptos (Qift), Upper Egypt, and was donated to the Manchester Museum in 1893-4 by Mr Jesse Haworth.
