othe camp again. Another charge was ordered and the troops dashed back into thecamp, engaging in a hand-to-hand fight. This deadly encounter lasted but a fewminutes, when the Indians again retired to their shelter, all the while firing intothe brave little band of soldiers. General Gibbon now ordered a charge in opposite directions for the purpose ofdriving out the Indians who were in the woods, but as the soldiers advanced theIndians retreated still farther into the dense underbrush. When it became evidentto General Gibbon that it would be unwise to hold his position in the valley, heordered the men to retire up the hill and again take shelter in the timber. Thismovement was successfully accomplished, the troops carrying off with them suchof their wounded as could be found, the Nez Perces following closely and keepingup a constant fire. A HEAVY FIRE WAS AT ONCE OPENED. — 248 — shots were occasionally discharged into the position of the troops and in the eveningof the 10th the Indians gave them a parting volley and disappeared. The losses on both sides were very heavy, those of the troops being sixty-ninekilled and wounded out of a strength of 191. The number of wounded among theIndians could not be ascertained, but their killed number eighty-nine. Among this band of soldiers, every one of whom fought heroically, were five whoseactions were of such a conspicuous nature that they were awarded the Medal ofHonor. These men were: First Sergeant; Wm. D. Edwards, Sergeant Patrick Rogan, Pri-vate Lorenzo D. Brown, Musician John McLennan, all of Co.
