Commissioners Meachamand Dyar had their suspicions, but were overruled. Tobe, the wife of Scout Riddle,implored the commissioners not to go, as her tribesmen planned treachery andmurder; but her entreaties were in vain. Next morning the party started for the council-tent. They were General Canby,Dr. Thomas, Meacham, Dyar, Riddle and his Modoc wife, and the two warriors.Bogus Charley and Boston Charley; they carried no arms whatever; General Canbytook a box of cigars with him.
