DETAILLE No. 67 JEAN BAPTISTE JEDOUARB DETAILLE FRENCH (1848- ) THE RACE-HORSE GLADIA TEUR A very unusual picture to come from the brush of the great painter ofbattle-scenes. The famous race-horse stands on the level sward in the middleof a race-track, the midday sun casting dark shadows on the grass. Hissatin flanks shine sleek and glossy, the rippling muscles of his shoulders andhind quarters making a fine play of light and shade, and his nostrils actuallyseem to quiver before the spectators gaze. He is ridden by an elderlyjockey with the whiskers of a bygone day fringing his face, and before himstands a man in a light suit, evidently his owner. Signed at the loner left, Edouard Detaille, 1869. Height, )l\ inches; length, inches. Purchased from M. KlNMMUM & Co., 1880.

The room is an airy apartment, nagged with red sandstone.An enormous fireplace lined with blue tile occupies the rear wall, whilevarious retorts and other apparatus are set on a small stove or on the shelveswhich line the wall.
