Gambetta had been butlittle heard of outside the caf4s and thedining-rooms of the Latin Quarter, wherehe was wont to air his contemptuous, andsometimes majestic, eloquence, until theImperial ministry prosecuted the journalswhich had opened a subscription in honorof the memory of Baudin, the represent-ative of the people, who was killed upona barricade in the Faubourg St. Martin,at the time of the coup detat. This sub-scription, and the orderly and inoffensivemanifestations which took place at thetomb of Baudin in the Montmartre ceme-tery, were scarcely worth the rigors inwhich the Imperial courts had indulged,and the papers resolved to give battle. So great wasGambettas personal excitement on thisoccasion that, as M. Weiss has told us,the Imperial advocate and the presidentof the court tried in vain a number oftimes to interrupt and moderate his pas-sionate harangue ; but their voices weredrowned in the thunder of the lawyersspeech and in the powerful protestationof his delivery.
