At the root of theneck the vago-sympathetic ends in a large ganglion,the i7iferior cervical ganglion, from which severalsmall branches are given off, passing toward the heartand entering the cardiac plexus. hX. the ganglionthe two nerves separate as shown in Fig. 6. 17. The Thoracic Vagus continues posteriorly fromthe ganglion, giving off also some small branches tojoin the cardiac plexus. Near the base of the heart itgives off a large branch, the recttrrent or inferior laryn-geal, which on the left side curves round the aorta andpasses anteriorly along the side of the trachea in theneck, where it can easily be found and followed to itstermination in the larynx, to the muscles of which itgives motor fibres. Dissect out the communicatingbranch to the superior laryngeal which passes beneaththe wino^ of the thvroid cartilasre.
