It's a cross between a jackrabbit and an antelope, both abundant in Wyoming, which, Douglasites point out, has authentic antelope horns as opposed to imitators in other places (they mean nearby Colorado, specifically) that pawn off jackrabbits with deer antlers as jackalopes. This may be posturing, considering the origin of the first known jackalope: In the 1930s, Douglas Herrick and his brother, Ralph, who were hunters with taxidermy skills, popularized the American jackalope by grafting DEER antlers onto a jackrabbit carcass and selling the combination to a local hotel right in Douglas, Wyoming. To further muddy the waters, a jackrabbit isn't even a rabbit (it's a hare). And the American antelope is not an antelope!
