This masking, dressing up,and begging for pennies still survives in New Yorkat Thanksgiving Day. Another favorite Shrove Tues-day amusement was Riding the Goose (see page 296). A petition to restrict the Shrovetide festivities fromthe Consistory of Wildwyck on Feb. 12, 1664, reads asfollows: The Consistory here, moved by their consciences andtheir duty as officers, petition the Magistrates of this placewith all proper humility, that the public, sinful and scan-dalous Baccanalian days of Shrovetide, (descended fromthe Heathen from their idol Bacchus, the God of wineand drunkenness: being also a leaven of Papacy, whichthe Apostel, i Cor. 5, has warned us to cast off), whichare near at hand, may be prohibited in this place byproper Placards from you, that we, by its publicationand reproof may eradicate this abomination, and therebythrough the Grace and Blessings of God, we, each of us,
