“Mr R P Hunt
Sir
Since writing you last we have received 23 bbls flour (Hunt) and 75 [bbls flour] Lee, Your brand was sold at $4 5/8 and 7 bbls of Lees @ $4 ½ the balance $4 3/8 the above July 3d. On the 16th rec’d 37 bbls Hunts and 17 Lees which were sold by retail from $4 5/8 to $4 7/8 – We advertised your Flour this morning that was stored in May and have endeavoured for a [few] days previous to obtain for it $4 ¾ but without success there being a prejudice to purchas that which has been stored for some time though it may be perfectly sweet – The cause of our offering it without your orders are that owing to the extreme warm weather we think there is a probability of its souring in which case it would cause you a considerable loss. We yesterday received a letter from Isaac Merritt of Troy stating that he held about 300 bbls of yours subject to our order and that he felt a little solicitous about it but hoped that it would keep – We presume there is less chance for its souring than what we held, as it hasnt been so much exposed but would prefer your advice about it ----- Flour has done much better within the last 10 days as you will perceive by the price current forwarded to you – last Saturday – There is a difficulty in obtaining correct information about the article from the dealers as each speaks according to his own interest It is now selling from $4 5/8 to $4 7/8 - not much is preserved at the latter price If the weather should remain very warm we would not be surprised to see it flatten but if cool it might have a reverse effect – We would be glad to hear from you as soon as convenient -- in haste
