“New York Dec’r 22 1824
Dear Sir
The Flour of which you advised me some time since arrived in due season but owing to an error in instructions being consigned to Fairlie instead of Faile, Mssrs Card & Co stored it in their store in place of informing me as usual. I was therefore not aware of it being here untill about ten days after its arrival when I called on Mr Card to make particular enquiry about it. you advised me of having ship’d 62 Bbls. In addition to this I have rec’d 11 Bbls, one having arrived since, and ten before the parcel of 62 making in all 73 Bbls of these Messrs. Card & Co had the Ten first rec’d inspected before they were stored they turn out 4 fine the balance super fine (the miller who received 100 Bushs. for 20 Bbls ought to blush at this). I sold the lot of 63 Bbls to a grocer at 4 5/6 at 30 Days not subject to inspection and afterward the others at the same price & time, deducting 50 cts pr Bbl on the fine. Flour from the LeRoy Mills is selling at $5 7/8 to 60 Bbls From the quality of your wheat"

"and the quantity given the Miller your Flour ought to be equal to this or any other which comes to this market. D. Merritt & Son inform me that [your?] brand has always been inferior to any other they receive from the west. There is no expense attached to your Flour, the cost of Storing and Carting, Messrs Card & Co must [fathom?] the [deed?] was their [error?] I have sold your Clover Seed at 8 cts 46/ per bush for Cash they contain in all 2553 bbls If you can take in Seed to [afford?] it here next season at that price there can be no risk as Seed here has to be weighed when sold it saves much trouble by marking on the bushs. the gross weight I have in place of [neet?] weight of Seed. I have rec’d pr Troy & Erie line one box containing Hand [wove?] and Beeswax, one Carton Linn Seed 3 Bbls pot ashes 21 Firkins Butter & by T & Douglass line 73 bbls Flour. The cash of seed & ashes sent with the flour has not arrived. I am asking 96 cts for your Butter and think that price will be obtained. The ashes still remain on hand I think they will do better as few weeks hence as the river has now closed. The persons who bought your flour, I consider so good, that I would be willing to guarantee the Sale at ½ per ct. I am gratified to hear that Lydia has followed our good example and must request you to wish her, for me, all the happiness of"
On back of document on right: "which the married state is susceptible. May she & also yourself (if you have not been already) soon be blessed with as fine a Boy as I have been presented with since you was here. Remember me to your Mother, also to your better half and be assured I remain thy friend.

P.S. Since writing the above I have rec’d yours, stating your dissappointment in money [missing] as this is the Season of the year in which my purchases are less than any other it gives me no inconvenience. I would request however that your remittance be made as early in the Spring as your convenience will permit. I have extended my business considerably during the last season without augmenting my capital am therefore not [burthened?] with Cash. I have taken up your note at [B.D. Halsachs] as requested. Timothy Seed will probably not command over 14 Dolls in the Spring at present no sales. Lard is now worth 9 cts and will probably maintain about that price while shipping demand lasts & of that no idea can be found. The prospects for wheat are very bad, the best information I can give you is that 1000 Bbls Canal Flour have been sold deliverable in the Spring at $4 ¾ - and 500 Bbls more were offered in the Coffee house today at the same price & not taken you ought not to purchase wheat over 5 to 5/6 pr Bush.”
