A sharp blowon the buttocks, with the palm of the hand, may causeinspiration; a few drops of cold water thrown forcibly onthe face and chest; or immersing in a bowl of warm waterand blowing in the mouth, after clearing away the mucus,may induce respiration. Schultzes method, illustrated onpage 200, has been successful when all others failed. Thisconsists in catching the child by the shoulders, thumbs infront, raising the child, with a swinging motion, and allow-ing the feet to fall over the chest. Performed rhythmically,with no greater frequency, per minute, than a child breathes,the lungs will finally respond, and the child, with a sharp,quick inspiration, gasps for breath. FEMINOLOGY.

When gestation is completed, the uterus begins con-traction, and presses out its contents by way of the vagina,the process being termed labor, or parturition. This isas natural as that a tree sheds its fruit when ripe. It isusually attended with more or less pain, and is often asevere trial upon the mothers strength and powers ofendurance. If she take a reasonable degree of care, gen-eral health may be improved, and weaknesses and illsameliorated or removed entirely; while the pain and dan-gers of childbirth will be reduced to a minimum, andafter disorders cannot occur. Childbirth ought to be free from suffering. Whenit is not, there is transgression of some natural law.Civilization ought to make this common, but naturaloccurrence one of as much ease and dispatch as it is insavage life, and more.
