The practice of selling subscription booksby numbers, once greatly in vogue, is nowconfined to a few houses, mostly English.Some of these have been very successful,but the greater part have abandoned it inconsequence of the dissatisfaction which itoccasioned. The numbers will sometimesfar exceed wliat was announced, to completethe work ; they are delivered at uncertaintimes, and when completed the cost is usu-ally much greater than the subscriber hadexpected. If they are all preserved theyhave still to be bound at a heavy expense. Itnot unfrequently happens that the subscribersdrop off so fast from disappointment anddissatisfaction that the publisher is compelledto abandon the work unfinished.
