some merchantable timber andthat are well stocked with a young growth of valuable speciesof hardwoods. WAYNE COUNTY. Location and Area. Wayne county, which was formed in 1842 from part ofCabell, is situated in the extreme southwestern part of the state.Its area is 545 square miles or 348,800 acres. Topography. Lying as it does along the lower course of the Big Sandyriver and for some distance along the Ohio, the county has alow elevation. The low land at the mouth of Big Sandy riverlies at about 500 feet being next in elevation above the lowestpoint in the state at Harpers Ferry. The western half of thecounty lies below 1,000 feet except an occasional hilltop andcrest of ridge. The surface of the eastern part of the county,excepting the channels of larger streams, lies above 1,000 feet.In a few places, as between the Right and Left Forks of Twelve-pole creek and southward from the Right Fork, the ridgesreach a height of 1,700 feet. ■^ ^ WEST VIRGINIA GEOLOGICAL SURVEY. 301 for about 6 miles, the Big Sandy river, with its Tug Fork, whichforms the southern boundary line for 50 miles, together withTwelvepole creek, a large tributary of the Ohio, constitute thedrainage system of the county. Twelvepole creek flows north-ward through the center of the county. Its principal tribu-traies are the Eight and Left Forks which flow together nearthe town of Wayne, Buffalo creek and Beech creek which emptyseveral miles below. Most of the numerous streams that emptyinto the Big Sandy and Tug Fork are small. Whites creek,Isom creek and Hurricane creek are the largest tributaries ofthe former, and Mill creek, Lost ctreek and Jennie creek thelargest of the latter. The Original Forests. The virgin forests have practically disappeared fromWayne, making it difficult to determine from present conditionsthe character of the original areas.
