Brattleboro.’ July 31st 1845.
Dear Sam,
We arrived here yesterday & are quite comfortably lodged in Mrs Farrarrs rooms. We engaged them at Pittsfield, so found them all in order for us. They overlook the village & its picturesque valley, & are precisely vis à vis the Drs establishment – which has the appearance of a nice country-house instead of a hospital.
We regret to say that there is no room for you under our roof, but a small one at the Dr’s is at your service if you still feel inclined to come, & you could board with us. We have simple [p. 2] but very excellent fare –
We have as yet seen no one but James Coleman, but every body seems to be, or to have been, here. Young Phillips & Miss Caroline Sturgis are at the Hospital.
We had a beautiful drive from Pittsfield in a barouche, & enjoyed our short visit there much.

Henry was dragged out of bed this morning at three by two mysterious individuals with lanthorns – can you submit to such barbaric treatment?
Charley rejoices in a curly [p. 3] haired playmate of his own size, sends many kisses to his Portland friends –
